Role of iodine oxoacids in atmospheric aerosol nucleation

Xu-Cheng He et al.

Summary: This study found that the nucleation rates of iodic acid particles are rapid and can even exceed those of sulfuric acid-ammonia particles. Ion-induced nucleation involves IO3- and the sequential addition of HIO3, while neutral nucleation involves the repeated addition of iodous acid (HIO2) followed by HIO3, with HIO2 playing a key stabilizing role. Freshly formed particles are composed almost entirely of HIO3, which promotes rapid particle growth at the kinetic limit.

Estimation of secondary organic aerosol viscosity from explicit modeling of gas-phase oxidation of isoprene and α-pinene

Tommaso Galeazzo et al.

Summary: This study utilized the GECKO-A model to conduct explicit chemical modeling of SOA formation, investigating the effects of chemical composition, relative humidity, and other factors on particle viscosity. The simulation results showed good agreement with measurements for isoprene SOA viscosity, while underestimating the viscosity of ff-pinene SOA. The study suggests that missing processes in the model and kinetic limitations may play a role in enhancing particle viscosity.
