Transmission of SARS-CoV-2: A Review of Viral, Host, and Environmental Factors

Eric A. Meyerowitz et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, primarily spreads through respiratory transmission, with infectiousness peaking around a day before symptom onset. Most individuals do not transmit the virus, while a few can cause super-spreading events.

The Household Secondary Attack Rate of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2): A Rapid Review

Hannah F. Fung et al.

Summary: The study found that the household secondary attack rate of SARS-CoV-2 was 17.1%, with potential underestimation if only single follow-up tests were conducted. Testing household contacts multiple times could increase the yield for identifying secondary cases, especially among older adult contacts and contacts of symptomatic cases.

SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence worldwide: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ali Rostami et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant variations in SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among different geographic regions, possibly related to income levels, human development indices, geographic latitudes, and climates. It was estimated that approximately 263.5 million individuals had been exposed or infected globally by 2020.

Comparison of 16 Serological SARS-CoV-2 Immunoassays in 16 Clinical Laboratories

Lene H. Harritshoj et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of 15 commercial and one in-house anti-SARS-CoV-2 assays in Danish laboratories. Most total antibody and IgG assays showed high sensitivity and specificity, with some overlap in confidence intervals. IgM results were more variable, with one assay demonstrating higher sensitivity and specificity.

SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and transmission risk factors among high-risk close contacts: a retrospective cohort study

Oon Tek Ng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the asymptomatic carriers and transmission risk factors of SARS-CoV-2 among household and non-household contacts. The results showed that sharing a bedroom and having verbal contact with an index case for 30 minutes or longer were associated with SARS-CoV-2 transmission among household contacts. Among non-household contacts, exposure to more than one case, having longer verbal contact with an index case, and sharing a vehicle with an index case were associated with SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

SARS-CoV-2 antibody prevalence in England following the first peak of the pandemic

Helen Ward et al.

Summary: The REACT-2 study in England found that by mid-July 2020, around 6% of adults had been infected with SARS-CoV-2, with healthcare workers and individuals of Black or South Asian ethnicity disproportionately affected. Although different ethnicities had similar infection fatality ratios, higher hospitalization and mortality rates in minority ethnic groups may be due to higher rates of infection rather than differential disease experience or care.

Summary: The Faroe Islands was successful in eliminating the first wave of COVID-19 through early implementation of large-scale testing, strict contact tracing, and lockdown measures. With 11.2% of cases being asymptomatic, transmission was mainly attributed to a small number of infectors.
