An Extremely Stretchable and Self-Healable Supramolecular Polymer Network

Huan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a polymer network with extreme stretchability, high mechanical strength, and self-healing capability was successfully constructed by synergistically incorporating metal-ligand and hydrogen bonds. The representative specimen showed remarkable mechanical properties superior to previously reported materials, and tunability of mechanical properties and self-healing capability was achieved by simply modifying the content of a chain extender. The application of the supramolecular polymer network in constructing a flexible and self-healable conductor was demonstrated, providing insights for preparing extremely stretchable and self-healable polymeric materials.

Mechanically Responsive Luminescent Polymers Based on Supramolecular Cyclophane Mechanophores

Yoshimitsu Sagara et al.

Summary: A new approach to cyclophane-based supramolecular mechanophores is introduced in this study. The mechanically responsive cyclic motif shows a noticeable change in emission color upon deformation, indicating a suppression of excimer-promoting interactions between luminophores. The research suggests that cyclophanes have the potential for developing various supramolecular mechanophores for detecting and visualizing weak forces in polymeric materials or living tissues.

Ketone-enol tautomerism, polymorphism, mechanofluorochromism and solid-state acidochromism of isoquinolinone-arylidenehydrazine derivatives

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: Four isoquinolinone-arylidenehydrazine derivatives with different aryl groups have been designed and synthesized in this study. These compounds exhibit solid-state fluorescence with emission wavelengths covering the visible-light region, showcasing different crystalline structures and emissions attributed to polymorphism and keto-enol tautomerism. The research provides a strategy for the development of solid-state fluorescent stimulus-responsive materials.

Tuning the mechanical flexibility of organic molecular crystals by polymorphism for flexible optical waveguides

Torvid Feiler et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the simultaneous tuning of mechanical flexibility and photoluminescence properties of organic molecular crystals through polymorphism. By obtaining and fully characterising two new polymorphic forms of the photoluminescent material CPMBP, the researchers showed a significant difference in mechanical properties and photoluminescence quantum yield between the polymorphic forms. The results suggest that polymorph engineering is a promising avenue for concurrent modulation of the optical and mechanical properties of photoluminescent molecular crystals for next-generation flexible optical devices.

Organoboron compounds constructed through the tautomerization of 1H-indole to 3H-indole for red OLEDs

Guoqi Xia et al.

Summary: The tautomerization of 1H-indole to 3H-indole by triphenylboron creates a pi-conjugated fused-ring skeleton that results in bright orange-red/red emission for the synthesized complexes. The rational molecular design leads to a red OLED with high external quantum efficiency and a color coordinate close to the red primary defined by the NSTC. The study demonstrates the potential of the 3H-indole group in OLED materials and the role of suppressing concentration quenching in achieving high efficiencies and good color coordinates in exciplex-hosted red fluorescent OLEDs.

Mechanically compliant single crystals of a stable organic radical†

Patrick Commins et al.

Summary: This study reports and characterizes the first plastically bendable single crystal of a permanent organic radical, which exhibits exceedingly soft characteristics due to weak interactions between radicals and S-N interactions. EPR imaging of the bent single crystal reveals the impact of deformation on the crystal's three-dimensional spin density. The unusual mechanical compliance of this material opens prospects for the development of flexible light-weight organic magnetoresistance devices based on weak, non-hydrogen-bonded interactions in molecular crystals.
