Continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis of S-functionalised carbon quantum dots for enhanced oil recovery

Ioan-Alexandru Baragau et al.

Summary: There is currently a lack of research and application of carbon-based nanomaterials for enhanced oil recovery. The use of sulfur-functionalized carbon quantum dots (S-CQDs) can significantly improve oil recovery rates in oil fields. S-CQDs exhibit excellent colloidal stability, low surface retention, and small particle size, which can effectively enhance oil recovery efficiency.

Femtosecond laser synthesis of nitrogen-doped luminescent carbon dots from acetonitrile

Artyom A. Astafiev et al.

Summary: Carbon dots (CDs) are a promising class of nanomaterials being synthesized using various methods, including hydrothermal synthesis and breakdown of larger carbon materials by different techniques. This study introduces a novel bottom-up approach to obtain nitrogen-rich carbonaceous nanoparticles via femtosecond laser irradiation of acetonitrile as a source of doping N atoms. It discusses the photophysical properties of the new material and the mechanism of photoluminescence (PL).

Mechanochemical synthesis of an elusive fluorinated polyacetylene

Benjamin R. Boswell et al.

Summary: Fluorinated polyacetylene, a long-sought-after air-stable polymer, has been successfully synthesized through a mechanochemical unzipping strategy. Polymer mechanochemistry is a valuable tool for accessing new materials on a preparative scale, especially those inaccessible by other means. This work demonstrates the potential of polymer mechanochemistry in the scalable synthesis of novel materials.

Optical processes in carbon nanocolloids

Giulio Ragazzon et al.

Summary: Carbon dots, graphene quantum dots, and other carbon nanocolloids have attracted interest as readily available, non-toxic, and tailorable carbon-based nanomaterials. Their luminescence remains a source of dispute, and the lack of understanding of their optical properties hampers their applications. Researchers are encouraged to explore the complexity of carbon nanocolloids.

Snapshots into carbon dots formation through a combined spectroscopic approach

Francesco Rigodanza et al.

Summary: The formation of novel carbon dots involves 4 consecutive steps: aggregation of small organic molecules, formation of a dense core with an extended shell, collapse of the shell, and aromatization of the core. The authors also demonstrate examples of routes towards tuning the core-shell design, synthesizing five novel carbon dots with an electron-dense core covered by an amine rich ligand shell. Studying the formation processes of carbon nanodots remains crucial for understanding their properties and chemical structure.

Absorption and emission of light in red emissive carbon nanodots

Neeraj Soni et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of a molecular fluorophore, QXPDA, in red emissive CNDs synthesized from OPDA, which dictates the emission characteristics of these CNDs. The experimental results confirm the extended conjugated structure of QXPDA and the similarity in trends of absorption and emission of light from different red emissive CNDs synthesized under varied conditions.
