Preparation of highly dispersive and antioxidative nano zero-valent iron for the removal of hexavalent chromium

Jinhua Wu et al.

Summary: Using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to stabilize zero-valent iron nanoparticles (CMC-nFe(0)) was found to enhance hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal efficiency by improving dispersion and antioxidation, preventing agglomeration and oxidation of particles, and effectively blocking oxygen infiltration, showcasing superior performance compared to untreated iron nanoparticles. Lower initial pH and higher iron dosage were found to further facilitate Cr(VI) removal. These findings suggest that CMC stabilization of iron nanoparticles holds promise for enhancing Cr(VI) elimination processes.

Mechanism for phosphorus removal from wastewater with fly ash of municipal solid waste incineration, Seoul, Korea

Shuai Gu et al.

Summary: A novel mechanism combining adsorption with chemical precipitation is proposed to interpret the removal of phosphorus with fly ash of municipal solid waste incineration. Thermodynamic modeling results demonstrate the vital roles of Ca2+ and OH- in the chemical precipitation process, with a mixed control by precipitation and adsorption observed at high phosphorus concentrations. The removal process of phosphorus with calcium-containing waste materials involves coupled reactions such as Ca(OH)(2) dissolution, hydroxyapatite precipitation, phosphorus adsorption, and carbonation, with peak removal efficiency achieved in a CO2-free atmosphere.

Highly efficient removal of phosphorus from agricultural runoff by a new akadama clay barrier-vegetated drainage ditch system (VDD) and its mechanism

Yan He et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new VDD system with akadama clay barriers, which showed high efficiency in removing phosphorus from agricultural runoff and reducing the risk of phosphorus release into streams. Adsorption of phosphate by akadama clay barriers was identified as the main mechanism for phosphorus removal in the system.
