Non-invasive assessment of respiratory muscle activity during pressure support ventilation: accuracy of end-inspiration occlusion and least square fitting methods

Giuseppe Natalini et al.

Summary: The study compared the accuracy of different methods for assessing respiratory muscle pressure and found that using the least square fitting method yielded results consistent with the reference esophageal pressure method, while the end-inspiratory occlusion method significantly underestimated the actual values. Additionally, these methods were found to be useful in identifying over-assistance during ventilation.

Flow Index: a novel, non-invasive, continuous, quantitative method to evaluate patient inspiratory effort during pressure support ventilation

Filippo Albani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between the shape of inspiratory flow quantified by Flow Index and patient's inspiratory effort during pressure support ventilation. Results showed that Flow Index was independently associated with patient effort and may provide useful information for setting inspiratory support and monitoring patient-ventilator interactions.
