Penalized quasi-maximum likelihood estimation for extreme value models with application to flood frequency analysis

Axel Buecher et al.

Summary: This study introduces a penalized quasi-maximum likelihood estimator to address the issue of estimating annual maximal river flow distributions in hydrology. The method effectively utilizes river flow observations from multiple stations and allows for gradual control between local and regional estimators.

Orographic Effect on Extreme Precipitation Statistics Peaks at Hourly Time Scales

Francesco Marra et al.

Summary: The orographic impact on extreme subdaily precipitation is crucial for risk management, and the study reveals a breaking of scale-invariance at subhourly durations. As elevation increases, precipitation decreases, and the relationship between 10-minute precipitation intensity and orography is weak.

Representation of Climate in Reanalyses: An Intercomparison for Europe and North America

Jan D. Keller et al.

Summary: Atmospheric reanalysis datasets are critical for assessing past climate variability, with newer global and regional reanalysis systems showing significant differences in performance, particularly in terms of precipitation representation. Regional reanalyses provide added value, especially in terms of precipitation, compared to global reanalyses.

Internal variability and temperature scaling of future sub-daily rainfall return levels over Europe

Benjamin Poschlod et al.

Summary: This study quantified the range of sub-daily extreme precipitation due to internal variability using the Canadian regional climate model. Results show an increasing trend of extreme precipitation over time, with short-duration rainfall intensities increasing more than longer-duration rainfall. Variations in the scaling of precipitation increase with temperature were significant among the 50 model members.

Causes, impacts and patterns of disastrous river floods

Bruno Merz et al.

Summary: This review examines the causes, impacts, and trends of disastrous river floods, finding that they have caused increasing economic losses and fatalities in the past century. Risk reduction measures and improved risk awareness have led to a decrease in the number of deaths and affected individuals in recent decades.

An analysis of temporal scaling behaviour of extreme rainfall in Germany based on radar precipitation QPE data

Judith Marie Poeschmann et al.

Summary: The study revealed three distinct scaling regimes in the depth-duration relationship of maximum rainfall in Germany, with some extraordinary events deviating from the usual power law behavior. Additionally, the shape of this relationship varied with the sample size of radar pixels, where smaller sample sizes showed smooth scaling behavior and larger sample sizes highlighted the three distinct scaling regimes. A pixel-wise classification also identified three distinguishable types of scaling behavior determined by the temporal structure of extreme rainfall events at each pixel.

Ten-year return levels of sub-daily extreme precipitation over Europe

Benjamin Poschlod et al.

Summary: This study presents a dataset of 10-year rainfall return levels over Europe based on climate model simulations to assess the frequency of extreme precipitation events. By using a high-resolution climate model simulation and comparing it to observational data, the results show good agreement in large parts of the study area for durations ranging from 3 to 24 hours.
