Mapping the biological activities of filamentous oxygenic photogranules

Hicham Ouazaite et al.

Summary: The study presents an experimental and modeling approach to quantify phototrophic O(2) production, heterotrophic O(2) consumption, and O(2) diffusion in filamentous photogranules. Light penetration into the photogranule was found to be the factor controlling photogranule activities, rather than the spatial distribution of heterotrophs and phototrophs. This emphasizes the need to analyze dynamics of light exposure of individual photogranules in photobioreactors.

Wastewater treatment using oxygenic photogranule-based process has lower environmental impact than conventional activated sludge process

Doris Brockmann et al.

Summary: The Life Cycle Assessment was used to compare the environmental feasibility of a novel wastewater treatment technology with a traditional system, finding that factors such as artificial lighting, biomass fate, and nitrogen flows in the system contribute to the potential environmental impact. Optimization is needed to reduce the overall environmental impact, with the potential for an energy neutral treatment system with optimized lighting.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process: A game changer of future municipal wastewater treatment?

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Future municipal wastewater treatment processes should shift towards multiple-functionality of synergetic water-resource-energy recovery and carbon neutral for maximizing environmental and economic sustainability. Current treatment technologies are unlikely to meet these requirements, while the amicroalgal-bacterial granular sludge process may provide a promising option for achieving multiple goals of municipal wastewater reclamation.

Ionic response of algal-bacterial granular sludge system during biological phosphorus removal from wastewater

Jixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Biological phosphorus removal involves changes in Ac-, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in wastewater, with the presence of algae not beneficial for PAOs to remove P but more K+ and P uptake by algae in AB-AGS suggesting its potential for manufacturing biofertilizer.

Temperature-effect on the performance of non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process in municipal wastewater treatment

Summary: The study found that high temperatures favored organic removal, with most of the ammonia-N being removed through microbial assimilation by microalgae and bacteria, and high efficiency of phosphorus removal. The contributions of microalgal and bacterial assimilations towards COD, ammonia and P removal appeared to be temperature-dependent.

Sludge reduction and pollutants removal in anaerobic-anoxic-oxic reactor with 2450 MHz electromagnetic wave loading on returned sludge: Performance and mechanism

Wenjiao Sang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of 2450 MHz electromagnetic wave loading on returned sludge for sludge reduction in anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process. The results showed improved total nitrogen removal and sludge reduction, along with enhanced microbial activity in the EWRS-A(2)O process compared to conventional A(2)O. Despite an increase in total phosphorus concentration, minimal effects on COD and ammonia nitrogen were observed.

Summary: This paper presents a new model for the evolution of the algae-bacteria ecosystem in an outdoor raceway for wastewater treatment. The ALBA model describes interactions among different microorganisms based on mass balances and the minimum-law principle, and was successfully calibrated using collected data. The model effectively reproduces dynamics and seasonal changes, highlighting the importance of paddle wheel regulation in system operation.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process for non-aerated aquaculture wastewater treatment

Siqi Fan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of the Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process for treating aquaculture wastewater. Results showed significant removal of various pollutants under non-aerated conditions, with microbial assimilation identified as a key contributor. The synergy between microalgae and bacteria resulted in effective removal of nitrate and nitrite, demonstrating the potential of MBGS as an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative in aquaculture wastewater treatment.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge for municipal wastewater treatment under simulated natural diel cycles: Performances-metabolic pathways-microbial community nexus

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigated a eukaryotic microalgae dominated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process for municipal wastewater treatment under simulated natural diel cycles, achieving excellent removal performances in terms of organics, ammonia-N and phosphate-P. Microbial assimilation by microalgae and bacteria was identified as the main mechanism for the observed removal of organics, ammonia and phosphate, with Chlorophyceae playing a key role in phosphorus removal and Alphaproteobacteria potentially responsible for ammonia removal. It is expected that this study can provide an environmentally sustainable option for municipal wastewater treatment.

Achieving superior nitrogen removal performance in low-strength ammonium wastewater treatment by cultivating concentrated, highly dispersive, and easily settleable granule sludge in a one-stage partial nitritation/anammox-HAP reactor

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: The application of granule sludge in a one-stage partial nitritation/anammox (PNA) reactor achieved high nitrogen removal rate in low-strength ammonium wastewater (LSAWW) treatment. Addition of hydroxyapatite (HAP) increased the density of granules, improved settlability of sludge and made high biomass achievable in a short HRT.

Hydrodynamic granulation of oxygenic photogranules

Joseph G. Gikonyo et al.

Summary: The study found that OPGs can be granulated rapidly and on a large scale from activated sludge under hydrodynamic conditions. Granulation only occurs with certain combinations of different energy input magnitudes. This granulation scheme relies on the "goldilocks" interaction of selection pressures and has potential applications in wastewater treatment with other granules.
