Wireless and battery-free technologies for neuroengineering

Sang Min Won et al.

Summary: This Review Article discusses recent progress in the development of miniaturized and ultralightweight devices for neuroengineering, which are wireless, battery-free, and fully implantable. These devices can restrict natural motions and prevent social interactions in animal models, limiting their utility in behavioural neuroscience research. However, advanced neural interfaces with optical, electrical, or fluidic functionality have emerged, capable of combining recording and stimulation modalities for closed-loop applications in basic studies or the treatment of abnormal physiological processes.

High-strength and fibrous capsule-resistant zwitterionic elastomers

Dianyu Dong et al.

Summary: This study presents a unique class of materials, called zwitterionic-elastomeric-networked (ZEN) hydrogels, which combine two weak zwitterionic hydrogels into a high-strength pure zwitterionic hydrogel to achieve both high mechanical properties and long-term resistance to fibrous capsule formation. This successful integration provides design principles for durable and fibrous capsule-resistant materials.

Viscoelastic surface electrode arrays to interface with viscoelastic tissues

Christina M. Tringides et al.

Summary: This study introduces a fully viscoelastic microelectrode array for electrical stimulation and signal recording of heart and brain activities in vivo, utilizing an alginate matrix and carbon-based nanomaterials encapsulated in a viscoelastic hydrogel. The combination of viscoelastic materials enables the array to closely match the biomechanical properties of soft biological tissues, overcoming previous limitations. The use of hydrogels as outer layers and a hydrogel-based conductor enhanced with carbon nanomaterials allows for the fabrication of electrode arrays compatible with standard electrophysiology platforms.
