Tracking tendon fibers to their insertion - a 3D analysis of the Achilles tendon enthesis in mice

Julian Sartori et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the 3D fiber tracks in macroscopic tendon samples, revealing that the insertion is not reinforced in terms of fiber numbers or sizes. The orientation of fibers in the tendon center is higher than in the margins, which could inspire material development. Fibers inserting at a protrusion of the insertion area stem from a distinct portion within the tendon, suggesting that fibrous structure analysis can link macro- to micromechanics.

The rate of tendon failure in a collagen fibre recruitment-based model

Jeff M. Barrett et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of the mechanical response of collagenous tissues is crucial for investigating soft tissue injury mechanisms. This study aimed to determine if parameters characterizing damage accumulation in a collagen-distribution model are proportional to strain rate. Results showed that the breaking function was proportional to strain rate, while Young's Modulus and failure stresses and strains remained relatively constant across different strain rates tested.

Summary: Enthesis connects tendon and bone exhibiting excellent toughness, with a fibrous architecture balancing strength and toughness. In vivo models show optimization of trade-offs through various cross-scale mechanisms.
