Process scale-up of an efficient acid-catalyzed steam pretreatment of rice straw for xylitol production by C. Tropicalis MTCC 6192

Saumya Singh et al.

Summary: The study focuses on optimizing operational parameters for acid-catalyzed rice straw pretreatment in xylitol production. By pretreating rice straw soaked in 1.5% H2SO4 at 121 degrees C for 30 minutes, a xylose yield of 75.77% was achieved. Fermenting the hydrolysate with C. tropicalis MTCC 6192 resulted in a xylitol yield of 0.6 g/g of xylose, showing promise for commercial scale production and minimal pollution impact.

Multi-scale study of the integrated use of the carbohydrate fractions of sugarcane bagasse for ethanol and xylitol production

Felipe A. F. Antunes et al.

Summary: A multi-scale study of sugarcane bagasse pretreatments and integrated developments for ethanol and xylitol production were presented. Acid hydrolysis of SB showed potential for hemicellulosic ethanol production, while alkaline hydrolysis followed by fermentation processes yielded ethanol. Structural analysis of SB indicated clear changes along the pretreatment processes, highlighting the potential for sustainable use of SB carbohydrates for bioproducts.

Optimized Bioconversion of Xylose Derived from Pre-Treated Crop Residues into Xylitol by Using Candida boidinii

Soma Bedo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of oxygen transfer rate and initial xylose concentration on xylitol production, and conducted xylitol fermentation on wheat bran and rice straw hydrolysates. High xylitol yields were achieved at low initial xylose concentration and oxygen transfer rate. Efficient pre-treatments for xylose-rich hydrolysates were selected on wheat bran and rice straw.

Optimization of activated charcoal detoxification and concentration of chestnut shell hydrolysate for xylitol production

Kubra Eryasar-Orer et al.

Summary: Optimizing detoxification conditions and concentration levels can increase the xylose concentration in chestnut shell hemicellulosic hydrolysate, leading to enhanced xylitol production. Additionally, fortification of the hydrolysate with xylose can result in a threefold increase in maximum xylitol concentration.

Xylitol enhances synthesis of propionate in the colon via cross-feeding of gut microbiota

Shasha Xiang et al.

Summary: Xylitol did not significantly alter the gut microbiome structure, but notably increased SCFAs production, especially propionate and butyrate. Cross-feeding was observed among Lactobacillus reuteri, Bacteroides fragilis, and Escherichia coli in the utilization of xylitol, revealing key enzymes in xylitol metabolism.
