Rethinking application of animal manure for wheat production in China

Yonghua Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on China's wheat production and a large-scale farmer survey to investigate the effects of animal manure applications. The research found that although using manure can increase soil organic carbon and wheat yield, the low manure-use rate is mainly due to low economic profits. Policies and investment incentives that increase economic profits and minimize environmental costs will be crucial to facilitate the widespread use of manure in wheat production.

Black film mulching can replace transparent film mulching in crop production

Gang He et al.

Summary: Plastic film mulching systems can increase crop yield and water use efficiency, but shorten crop phenology; compared with transparent film mulching, black film mulching can lower soil temperature, extend crop phenology, increase maize yield, and improve marketable tuber rate of potato.

Applying more nitrogen is not always sufficient to address dryland wheat yield gaps in Australia

Roger Lawes et al.

Summary: The survey analysis of wheat yield gaps found that yield potential and nitrogen are important predictors of the yield gap, with fields of high yield potential more likely to have a higher yield gap. In high yielding regions, wheat yield gaps are related to crop rotation, leaf diseases, and weed populations; while in low rainfall zones, wheat yield gaps are related to soil pathogens.

High Nitrate Accumulation in the Vadose Zone after Land-Use Change from Croplands to Orchards

Jingbo Gao et al.

Summary: Conversion from croplands to intensive orchards leads to increased nitrogen surplus in orchards, significant accumulation of nitrate in deep soil profiles, and serious contamination of groundwater; highlighting the vital role of deep soil nitrate storage in regulating the global nitrogen cycle.

Replacing synthetic fertilizer by manure requires adjusted technology and incentives: A farm survey across China

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Improved animal manure recycling can help reduce synthetic fertilizer use in cropland. However, in China, only 55% of farmers actually use manures, with barriers including perceived high costs, lack of suitable technology, and uncertainties in quality and availability. Specific policy incentives and outreach strategies are needed to promote manure use.
