Advances in water treatment technologies for removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Existing concepts, emerging trends, and future prospects

Adedapo O. Adeola et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, environmental experts have focused on developing various methods and technologies for remediating PAH-polluted water, including physical, chemical, biological, and photocatalytic approaches. Despite many methods still being in development, a comprehensive and integrated approach shows promise for more effective remediation of PAH-contaminated water. The goal is to bridge information gaps and ensure a green and sustainable remedial approach for PAH-contaminated aqueous systems.

Nanocomposites of graphene and zirconia for adsorption of organic-arsenic drugs: Performances comparison and analysis of adsorption behavior

Shan-Juan Zou et al.

Summary: The nanocomposites of zirconia nanoparticles with different crystal phases exhibited varying adsorption capacities for 3-NHPAA. The monoclinic phase of zirconia showed superior adsorption performance with a wider pH range. Adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm, and was found to be endothermic and spontaneous.

Nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide with pure monoclinic-ZrO2 and pure tetragonal-ZrO2 for selective adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline

Dong Hao et al.

Summary: By controlling the dosage of triethanolamine, two nanocomposites of monoclinic-ZrO2@rGO and tetragonal-ZrO2@rGO were successfully prepared, with the tetragonal-ZrO2@rGO exhibiting a higher adsorptive amount for OTC. Both nanocomposites show a selective uptake of OTC among tetracycline antibiotics, with adsorption reaching equilibrium in 15 minutes and being independent of pH in the range of 4-8. The interactions between OTC and the nanocomposites were revealed through Fourier transform infrared and XRD analysis, with surface complexation, pi-pi, and cation-pi bonding interactions playing a crucial role.

Utilization of MWCNTs/Al2O3 as adsorbent for ciprofloxacin removal: equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic studies

Davoud Balarak et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption behavior of ciprofloxacin onto MWCNTs/Al2O3 was investigated, showing that under optimized conditions, the Langmuir model was followed with a high maximum adsorption capacity. The thermodynamic studies revealed that the biosorption process is endothermic and spontaneous, with the adsorption experiment following a physical process. The data suggests that MWCNTs/Al2O3 could be an effective adsorbent material for removing antibiotics from water and wastewater.

Effective adsorption of ciprofloxacin antibiotic using powdered activated carbon magnetized by iron(III) oxide magnetic nanoparticles

Tariq J. Al-Musawi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that PAC@Fe3O4-MN exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for CIP, with a favorable, spontaneous, and endothermic process. The interaction of CIP with PAC@Fe3O4-MN was found to occur through both chemical and physical reactions on a homogeneous layer of active sites, controlled by film diffusion. The adsorbent showed promise for sustainable and cost-effective treatment of CIP-contaminated wastewater, with the ability to be recycled through multiple adsorption-desorption cycles.

A hybrid sorbent of α-iron oxide/reduced graphene oxide: Studies for adsorptive removal of tetracycline antibiotics

Shan-Juan Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, nanocomposites of alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were prepared using a one-pot method, showing high adsorption capacity for Tetracyclines antibiotics (TAs) and fitting well with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order equations. The relatively low adsorption of oxytetracycline was attributed to its weak interactions with RGO and slack complexation with alpha-Fe2O3.
