The upper airway volume effects produced by Hyrax, Hybrid-Hyrax, and Keles keyless expanders: a single-centre randomized controlled trial

Gordon C. Cheung et al.

Summary: This study assessed upper airway volume changes after RME with three different expanders and found that there were relatively small increases in total upper airway volume and its separate compartments, with no statistically significant differences across the Hyrax, Hybrid-Hyrax, and Keles groups. However, the Hybrid-Hyrax group showed the best performance in total airway volume increase among pre-peak patients.

Skeletal and dentoalveolar effects using tooth-borne and tooth-bone-borne RME appliances: a randomized controlled trial with 1-year follow-up

Farhan Bazargani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of tooth-borne and tooth-bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion, showing that the TBB group had significantly higher skeletal expansion at the midpalatal suture and nasal cavity level. However, there were no significant differences between the groups in terms of dental expansion, alveolar bending, tipping of the molars, and stability 1 year post-expansion.

Dental arch changes comparison between expander with differential opening and fan-type expander: a randomized controlled trial

Camila Massaro et al.

Summary: The study found that there were differences in the posterior crossbite correction effectiveness between EDO and FE, with EDO showing better results. Both expanders had an impact on the shape of the maxillary arch, with EDO group showing more significant changes in the posterior region. Discomfort during activation was a common issue during treatment, so attention should be paid to patient comfort.

Maxillary dental and skeletal effects after treatment with self-ligating appliance and miniscrew-assisted rapid maxillary expansion

Roberta Caetano Calil et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of self-ligating appliance and MARPE treatment on maxillary dental and skeletal changes. The results showed that MARPE was more effective in treating severe skeletal transverse discrepancies, while self-ligating appliances had better results in terms of buccal bone loss, tooth inclination, and transverse skeletal increase of the maxilla.

Does the rhythm and appliance type of rapid maxillary expansion have an effect on root resorption? A comparative clinical study using micro-computed tomography

Siddik Malkoc et al.

Summary: This study evaluated root resorption in upper first premolars after different rapid maxillary expansion appliances and activation rhythms, finding that all appliances caused resorption but full coverage acrylic bonded appliances may be safer. Resorption was mostly concentrated on the buccal surface, with no effect of activation rhythm on root resorption.

Summary: The study compared the effects of a hybrid miniscrew-supported expander with a conventional Hyrax expander in growing patients. The hybrid expander group showed significantly greater increases in nasal cavity width, maxillary width, and buccal alveolar crest width. No differences were observed in dental arch width or shape changes between the two groups.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of orthodontic treatments on unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB) in primary and early mixed dentition, with 11 studies included. The quality of the studies was found to be higher compared to previous reviews, but issues such as heterogeneity of treatments and measurement strategies limit the ability to provide reliable scientific evidence on the most effective UPXB treatment.
