Multi-Elemental Analysis of Wine Samples in Relation to Their Type, Origin, and Grape Variety

Magdalena Gajek et al.

Summary: The study found that red wines contain higher levels of certain elements compared to other wine types (white and rose), while white wines have higher levels of other elements and rose wines have higher concentrations of iron and uranium. The study also revealed that in some samples, the maximum levels of certain metals slightly exceeded OIV standards, but overall the wines contained lower levels of heavy metals, suggesting they are safe for consumption. Additionally, wines from Poland, USA, and Australia showed distinctive elemental fingerprints, with different characteristic metals for identification of country of origin.

Validation of a Method Scope Extension for the Analysis of POPs in Soil and Verification in Organic and Conventional Farms of the Canary Islands

Andrea Acosta-Dacal et al.

Summary: The study tested and validated an easy method based on QuEChERS for extracting 49 persistent organic pollutants (8 PBDEs, 12 OCPs, 11 PAHs, and 18 PCBs) in soils and analyzing them by GC-MS/MS. The method was validated in terms of linearity, precision, and accuracy, with a matrix effect study conducted. Detection limits (LOD) ranged from 0.048 to 3.125 ng g(-1) and quantification limits (LOQ) ranged from 0.5 to 20 ng g(-1), except for naphthalene (50 ng g(-1)). The validated method was applied to 81 soil samples from farms in the Canary Islands, revealing residues of OCPs, PCBs, and PAHs in both organic and conventional production modes.
