Synthesis and gas separation performances of intrinsically microporous polyimides based on 4-methylcatechol-derived monomers

Xiaofan Hu et al.

Summary: A novel type of intrinsically microporous polyimides (PIM-PI) with high molecular weights and adequate rigidity was developed in this study, showing excellent gas separation performance. The rigid, sterically hindered, and contorted structures of PIM-PIs give them superior gas-sieving capabilities, especially MMBMDA-FDBDA exhibiting comparable separation performance to the benchmark PIM-1 membrane.

Metal ion cross-linked nanoporous polymeric membranes with improved organic solvent resistance for molecular separation

Xiaofan Luo et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a new generation of OSN membranes through metal ion cross-linking, which exhibit excellent stability in various organic solvents and high rejection rates to dyes. Compared to traditional chemical cross-linkers, metal ion cross-linking does not significantly reduce membrane permeability, and also improves membrane compaction resistance.

Remarkably enhanced gas separation properties of PIM-1 at sub-ambient temperatures

Wenhui Ji et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively characterized the gas separation performance of PIM-1 at low temperatures for the first time, showing a continuous decrease in gas permeability and a significant increase in ideal gas pair selectivity as temperature decreases. PIM-1 exhibited high O-2 and CO2 permeability as well as ideal selectivity at -30 degrees C, with the enhanced performance attributed to the shrinkage of micropores in PIM-1 at low temperatures.

Next generation polymers of intrinsic microporosity with tunable moieties for ultrahigh permeation and precise molecular CO2 separation

Ahmad Arabi Shamsabadi et al.

Summary: Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) with high free volumes, synthesized by incorporating contorted rigid moieties into polymer backbones, have not been industrially used due to fast physical aging despite their exceptional CO2 permeability and selectivity. Recent advances in PIM-based membranes focus on modifying PIM structures for improved CO2 separation performance and reduced physical aging, including strategies such as using suitable side chains, kinked moieties, and stable structures.

Penetrant competition and plasticization in membranes: How negatives can be positives in natural gas sweetening

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy of incorporating engineered metal organic framework fillers into membranes to convert apparent negatives into positives, greatly enhancing the efficiency of natural gas sweetening. The hybrid membranes promote the permeation of H2S and CO2 while hindering CH4 permeation, and also enable controlled plasticization benefits by altering the plasticization responses of polymer matrices. Ultimately, a highly tunable MOF-polymer hybrid membrane platform is demonstrated to meet diverse natural gas sweetening requirements under aggressive conditions.
