There is mixed empirical evidence on the impact of Airbnb's expansion on hotels in tourist destinations. Based on monthly data from Barcelona between August 2010 and October 2018, the study suggests that the growth of the peer-to-peer market for tourist accommodation has negatively affected hotels' occupancy and performance, regardless of their category.
Available empirical evidence on the effect of Airbnb's expansion on hotels in tourist destinations is mixed. With monthly data from the city of Barcelona between August 2010 and October 2018, we have noted that, following our estimation, the growth of the peer-to-peer market for tourist accommodation has negatively affected hotels' occupancy and performance, independently of their category.
