Summary: This research investigates the challenges faced by digital platform-based sharing economy ventures in establishing legitimacy for their business models, using Uber Technologies' experiences in four U.S. cities as a case study. The study reveals that these ventures need to build cognitive and sociopolitical legitimacy to gain acceptance and adapt their digital platforms and business models through liminal movement strategies.

It shows how Cisco created a new platform, Fog, while maintaining its role as a complementor to the dominant platform, Cloud. By developing a process model, the study reveals how firms in peripheral roles can reposition themselves through a mix of actions to develop and legitimize an alternative platform.
