The effect of alginate composition on adsorption to calcium carbonate surfaces

Kathryn Louise Browning et al.

Summary: Bacterial anchoring to limestone rocks is facilitated by selective adsorption of biomolecules like polysaccharides from the extracellular matrix. The adsorption of sodium alginate, a model matrix polysaccharide, at the calcite/water interface is driven by complexation of free calcium ions leading to dissolution of the calcite surface. Polysaccharide adsorption to sparingly soluble calcite interfaces is influenced by polymer conformation and affinity for free calcium ions in solution.
