Pro-market institutions and outward FDI of emerging market firms: An institutional arbitrage logic

Ryan W. Tang

Summary: This study offers new theory and evidence on the effects of pro-market institutions on outward foreign direct investment of emerging market firms, proposing an inverted U-shaped relationship between host market-supporting institutions and investment scale. By integrating escapism and exploitation mechanisms of EMF internationalization, the research enriches the literature on institutional arbitrage and pro-market institutions with evidence from EMFs.
