Now the Code Runs Itself: On-Chain and Off-Chain Governance of Blockchain Technologies

Summary: The invention of Bitcoin as a new form of electronic cash in 2008 has been seen as a radical financial innovation in the past decade. With the development of blockchain technologies, questions have arisen regarding the tensions between on-chain governance systems and off-chain applications. The paper explores the similarities between on-chain governance and positivist legal systems, highlighting issues that have arisen, such as the DAO incident, and reflecting on the vulnerabilities of existing blockchain-based systems.
