Bringing political psychology into the study of populism

Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser

Summary: The article points out that while the concept of populism is contested in the social sciences, there is increasing consensus within the political science literature on using an ideational definition. This definition not only provides a clear concept for empirical research on populism, but also allows for the study of different aspects of the phenomenon. However, at present, there are limited links between the study of populist attitudes in political science and the literature on political psychology.
