Quantum confinement of the Dirac surface states in topological-insulator nanowires

Felix Muenning et al.

Summary: The non-trivial topology of three-dimensional topological insulators leads to the appearance of unique gapped Dirac sub-band structures in nanowires, which are important for future Majorana qubits. These quantized sub-bands can be observed by tuning the chemical potential in the gate-voltage dependence of the resistance.

Charge-Impurity Effects in Hybrid Majorana Nanowires

Benjamin D. Woods et al.

Summary: This study addresses the quantitative characterization of disorder effects in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures for the development of Majorana-based topological qubits. By developing a microscopic theory, the research provides insights into the impact of charge impurities on the physics of the hybrid structure and offers a clear direction for experimental progress, including specific material quality and semiconductor purity targets that must be achieved.

Shadow-wall lithography of ballistic superconductor-semiconductor quantum devices

Sebastian Heedt et al.

Summary: The study presents an on-chip fabrication technique based on shadow walls to implement topological qubits in an InSb nanowire without the need for fabrication steps such as lithography and etching. This advancement enables the realization of hybrid superconductor-semiconductor quantum devices, ultimately leading to the implementation of topological qubits.

Majorana bound states in topological insulators without a vortex

Henry F. Legg et al.

Summary: This study investigates a three-dimensional topological insulator wire with a nonuniform chemical potential generated by gating, lifting degeneracy between surface state subbands. By applying a magnetic field along the wire, time-reversal symmetry is broken and Kramers degeneracy is lifted, leading to the emergence of Majorana bound states at the ends of the wire. Proximity to an s-wave superconductor can induce a topological phase even at weak magnetic fields, providing a simplified pathway for experiments to realize Majorana bound states in present-day TI wire devices.

Disorder effects in topological insulator nanowires

Yi Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates three-dimensional topological insulator nanowires as a main component of Majorana bound states devices, focusing on the effects of random Coulomb potential and resistance in the wires. The experiment results suggest that the dielectric constant contrast affects the distribution of electric field and the contribution of impurities.
