Charge Localization Induced by Nanopore Defects in Monolayer Black Phosphorus for Suppressing Nonradiative Electron-Hole Recombination through Time-Domain Simulation

Haoran Lu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that introducing nanopore defects in black phosphorus can extend the non-radiative electron-hole recombination time. This is attributed to the increased bandgap, decreased wave function overlap, and slowed atomic motions caused by the nanopore defects. It provides important insights for understanding the excited-state properties of black phosphorus and defect engineering in 2-dimensional materials to reduce non-radiative charge and energy losses.

Unraveling CO adsorption on model single-atom catalysts

Jan Hulva et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the adsorption strength of CO on single metal sites differs from that on metal surfaces and supported clusters, as charge transfer affects the d-states of the metal atom and the metal-CO bond strength. CO-induced structural distortions reduce adsorption energies, with the extent of relaxations depending on local geometry.

Concentric Approximation for Fast and Accurate Numerical Evaluation of Nonadiabatic Coupling with Projector Augmented-Wave Pseudopotentials

Weibin Chu et al.

Summary: A highly efficient and accurate method for numerical evaluation of nonadiabatic coupling in the Kohn-Sham representation with PAW pseudopotentials has been developed. It provides a significant improvement in accuracy without additional cost, compared to the current technique, and is much faster. The method simplifies NA evaluation in the core region, is robust to variations in the MD time step, and helps to maintain phase consistency of coupling.

Controlling Charge Carrier Trapping and Recombination in BiVO4 with the Oxygen Vacancy Oxidation State

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: This study uses nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of oxygen vacancies (OV) on charge carrier lifetimes in BiVO4 photoanodes. The simulations reveal that neutral OV cause local structural distortions and deep polaron-like hole traps, accelerating nonradiative recombination. Ionized OV states restore bandgap and charge carrier lifetimes.

Polaron-Adsorbate Coupling at the TiO2(110)-Carboxylate Interface

Alex J. Tanner et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the profound and differing effects of the dissociative adsorption of formic and acetic acids on the surface density, crystal field, and photoexcitation of polarons in rutile TiO2(110). The contrasting electrostatic properties of the acids govern the extent of polaron-adsorbate coupling, leading to new photoexcitation channels and potentially increasing the catalytic photoyield. The density of polarons in the surface region increases more in formate-terminated TiO2(110) compared to acetate, with potential implications for catalytic activity.

Water Splitting with a Single-Atom Cu/TiO2 Photocatalyst: Atomistic Origin of High Efficiency and Proposed Enhancement by Spin Selection

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: The study shows that Cu-doped TiO2 (Cu/TiO2) can enhance light absorption and photocatalytic properties, leading to high photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity. Spin selection can further enhance the photocatalytic performance of Cu/TiO2, improving charge carrier lifetimes significantly. The results provide mechanistic insights into single atom photocatalysis and suggest that spin selection can be utilized for the development of advanced and efficient systems for solar energy conversion.

Elucidation of Active Sites in Aldol Condensation of Acetone over Single-Facet Dominant Anatase TiO2 (101) and (001) Catalysts

Fan Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, two catalysts with high surface areas and clean, dominant facets were synthesized to investigate the vapor phase acetone aldol condensation. The {001} facet showed higher activity than the {101} facet, likely due to weaker Lewis acid and Bronsted base strengths favoring a more exothermic C-C coupling step. The study provides insights into the reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and structure-function relationships on transition metal oxide catalysts.
