Clostridioides difficile exploits toxin-mediated inflammation to alter the host nutritional landscape and exclude competitors from the gut microbiota

Summary: Through the analysis of tcdR mutants in two strains of Clostridioides difficile and omics, this study found that toxin-induced inflammation significantly alters the metabolism pathways of C. difficile and the gut microbiota. The host cell gene expression characteristics promote the in vivo growth of C. difficile. Furthermore, inflammation induced by C. difficile toxin activity excludes Bacteroides genus members that can utilize essential nutrients released from collagen degradation.
