Perceptions of an endangered Baltic Sea

Hans von Storch

Summary: In a series of ad-hoc surveys conducted at various academic institutions in the Baltic Sea region, students and young scholars were asked about their perspectives on environmental issues and management responsibility for the Baltic Sea. Overfishing, climate change, and waste were identified as significant problems, while tourism and constructions were seen as less severe. The responsibility for managing the Baltic Sea was primarily attributed to the European Union or national governments. The emergence of consistent perceptions among students and young scholars suggests a general attitude in the Baltic regions.

Framework for the environmental impact assessment of operational shipping

Jana Moldanova et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to understanding the environmental impacts of shipping, using a framework developed for a case study in the Baltic Sea. By transferring knowledge and concepts from air pollution assessments, a better understanding of shipping-related impacts can be achieved.

Review of Mesoscale Wind-Farm Parametrizations and Their Applications

Jana Fischereit et al.

Summary: The paper conducts a systematic literature review on wind-farm parametrization for mesoscale models, identifying differences in explicit WFPs and their performance depending on background meteorological conditions and model set-up. It summarizes findings on wind-farm-flow effects characterization, environmental impact, and implications for wind-energy planning. The review suggests future work should focus on validation studies, model physics development, and more interactions between mesoscale and microscale communities.

Provision of aquatic ecosystem services as a consequence of societal changes: The case of the Baltic Sea

Kari Hyytiainen et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the impact of different future developments of aquatic ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea on human well-being. By simulating two global futures (Sustainable well-being vs. Fossil-fuelled development), it was found that different global futures lead to clearly diverging trajectories in the provision of marine ecosystem services. Long-term projections of aquatic ecosystem services can help policy makers and managers adjust mitigation and adaptation efforts with plausible future changes in water pollution drivers.

Modelling spatial dispersion of contaminants from shipping lanes in the Baltic Sea

Ilja Maljutenko et al.

Summary: Major sources of pollution from shipping to marine environments include antifouling paint residues and various types of water discharges. Studies have shown that the dispersion of contaminants is influenced by surface kinetic energy and vertical stratification at the discharge location, with an elevated concentration persisting for about two days and dispersing over a spatial scale of 10-60 km.

Mitigation of CO2 emissions from international shipping through national allocation

Henrik Selin et al.

Summary: The study proposes five allocation options for international shipping CO2 emissions, showing that a clear majority of emissions would be distributed to ten countries under each option, with variations in the top ten countries and the amount allotted to individual countries. The most effective and equitable allocation mechanism would assign emissions to countries of ship owners and operate under the UNFCCC.

Distribution and bioavailability of mercury in the surface sediments of the Baltic Sea

Urszula Kwasigroch et al.

Summary: The study investigated the levels of mercury and its forms in surface sediments of the Baltic Sea, finding that Hg concentrations were highest in industrialized areas and regions affected by historical activities. Labile Hg fractions, mainly organic compounds, were found to be dominant and potentially release into the water column, impacting the trophic chain. Despite reduced Hg emissions, surface sediments remain a significant secondary Hg source in the Baltic Sea ecosystem.

Chinese lockdown as aerosol reduction experiment

Hans Von Storch et al.

Summary: The lockdown of large parts of the Chinese economy starting in late January 2020 led to significant regional changes in aerosol loads, resulting in a regional warming. The study found that temperatures at selected stations in central China were higher than in the previous two years, showing a notable diurnal warming signal. This warming trend was observed in non-lockdown regions as well, suggesting that the difference in temperatures between 2020 and 2019/2018 may overestimate the effect of the lockdown.

Inorganic carbon and alkalinity biogeochemistry and fluxes in an intertidal beach aquifer: Implications for ocean acidification

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the biogeochemistry of inorganic carbon in an intertidal aquifer in Hong Kong and its impact on Tolo Harbor through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). It found that locally produced total alkalinity (TAlk) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the aquifer contribute over 50% of the discharged TAlk and DIC to the ocean. The distributions of TAlk and DIC in different zones (mangrove and bare beach) vary due to hydrogeological and geochemical conditions. Additionally, TAlk and DIC fluxes discharged with SGD were found to be significantly higher during the wet season compared to the dry season.

Summary: Urban sewage water pathways, especially stormwater runoff and wastewater treatment plants, are significant sources of microplastics emissions to the Baltic Sea. Modelling of discharges from Baltic Sea shipping

Jukka-Pekka Jalkanen et al.

Summary: This paper describes the new developments of the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM) which enable the modelling of pollutant discharges to water from ships. Each type of discharge is regulated by different sections of the IMO MARPOL convention, with varying emission patterns and total amounts reported for the year 2012 in the Baltic Sea area. Open-loop SOx scrubbing effluent was found to be the second-largest pollutant stream by volume, indicating a significant increase in scrubber discharges in recent years. The environmental impacts of these discharges need to be investigated in detail.
