Vegetation change in the Baringo Basin, East Africa across the onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation 3.3-2.6 Ma

Rachel L. Lupien et al.

Summary: This study presents a new record of basin-scale vegetation change in the late Pliocene in the Baringo Basin of Kenya, showing a shift from C-3 forests to C-4 grasslands. This transition may have been driven by changes in basin geomorphology and a larger-scale drying and expansion of C-4 vegetation in East Africa. Variations in precipitation and lake level oscillations during the late Pliocene are found to be correlated with significant changes in vegetation resources in the Baringo Basin.

Phytoliths, pollen, and microcharcoal from the Baringo Basin, Kenya reveal savanna dynamics during the Plio-Pleistocene transition

Chad L. Yost et al.

Summary: This study investigates vegetation changes and fire impacts in the hominin activity area from 3.29 to 2.56 million years ago through examining phytoliths, pollen, and microcharcoal contents. Results show periodic fluctuations in woody vegetation cover before 3.1 million years ago, with subsequent low wood cover and oscillations between tall-grass and short-grass savanna controlled mainly after this time.

Sea level and deep-sea temperature reconstructions suggest quasi-stable states and critical transitions over the past 40 million years

Eelco J. Rohling et al.

Summary: Sea level and deep-sea temperature variations are crucial indicators of global climate changes. Recent studies have shown distinct nonlinearity between sea level and delta(w) changes over the past 40 million years, indicating complex dynamical behavior in Earth's climate system.

The transient impact of the African monsoon on Plio-Pleistocene Mediterranean sediments

Bas de Boer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between North African climate changes and sedimentary records in the Mediterranean Sea, finding that orbital cycles play a significant role in influencing climate variability. Using the CLIMBER-2 model to simulate African climate during the Plio-Pleistocene period, the study compares simulations with climate reconstructions. Results show that runoff from the Sahara and Sahel regions has a strong impact on the Mediterranean dust input, with contributions changing over time.
