Summary: The intervention aimed at preventing falls in older people with cognitive impairment did not significantly reduce the overall fall rate, but did show a significant reduction in participants with better baseline physical function.

Potentially modifiable risk factors for slow gait in community-dwelling older adults: A systematic review

Erica Figgins et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify potentially modifiable risk factors associated with slow gait speed and clinically meaningful gait speed decline in older community-dwelling adults. The results suggest that physical activity, education level, body mass index-obesity, pain, and depression/depressive symptoms are commonly investigated risk factors showing significant associations with slow gait and/or meaningful gait speed decline. The findings support the idea that there are modifiable targets for maintaining gait speed that can be targeted for potential treatment.

Prevalence of depression, anxiety, and apathy symptoms across dementia stages: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Dara K. Y. Leung et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and apathy symptoms in dementia patients at different stages, finding that these emotional symptoms are highly prevalent across stages and do not change as the illness progresses. Evaluation methods and cultural differences may explain some of the variance, calling for further investigation and more cross-cultural studies.

The association between white matter hyperintensity volume and gait performance under single and dual task conditions in older people with dementia: A cross-sectional study

Rismah Hairu et al.

Summary: The study found that white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) volume is negatively correlated with gait speed and stride length in people with dementia. Participants with higher WMH burden showed significantly slower gait speed and reduced stride length in different conditions. Further research is needed to determine if vascular risk management can improve gait in older people with dementia.
