Unraveling the Growth Mechanism of Magic-Sized Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Aniket S. Mule et al.

Summary: The study investigates the growth mechanism of semiconductor magic-sized clusters, with a particular focus on CdSe nanocrystals. By synthesizing a series of gradually increasing magic-sized nanocrystals and developing a microscopic model, it reveals the layer-by-layer growth mechanism of zinc-blende crystallites and the source of special stability in these nanocrystals. The analysis also identifies strong similarities with the growth of semiconductor nanoplatelets, and exploits this to further increase the size range of magic-sized nanocrystals.

Oriented Attachment: From Natural Crystal Growth to a Materials Engineering Tool

Bastiaan B. Salzmann et al.

Summary: Crystal growth can occur through oriented attachment, a process in which colloidal particles align their atomic lattices and grow together into a single crystal. This can lower the total free energy of the crystal suspension under certain conditions.

Transformations Among Colloidal Semiconductor Magic-Size Clusters

Li He et al.

Summary: Understanding colloidal semiconductor magic-size clusters (MSCs) is crucial for grasping the evolution of fundamental properties from individual molecules to semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The two-step approach allowed for engineering MSCs as a sole product at room temperature, demonstrating first-order reaction kinetics behavior in their evolution. Further research is needed to gain a more precise understanding of the transformation processes of these magic species.

Understanding Discrete Growth in Semiconductor Nanocrystals: Nanoplatelets and Magic-Sized Clusters

Andrew B. Pun et al.

Summary: Semiconductor nanocrystals fluoresce with color dependent on size and shape, with efforts to synthesize uniform particles. Discrete growth is observed in two major classes: semiconductor nanoplatelets and magic-sized clusters, offering a different approach to uniform nanocrystals. Understanding the mechanism behind discrete growth may lead to more uniform nanomaterials with enhanced optical properties.

Reversible Transformations at Room Temperature among Three Types of CdTe Magic-Size Clusters

Qiu Shen et al.

Summary: This study reports the reversible transformations of CdTe magic-size clusters (MSCs) at room temperature through a process of quasi-isomerization combined with substitution reactions. The transformations occur among three types of CdTe MSCs and their precursor compounds with distinct absorption peak wavelengths.
