Gravity-Driven Membrane Reactor for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment: Effect of Reactor Configuration and Cleaning Protocol

Ihtisham Ul Haq Shami et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of three gravity-driven membrane reactors with various biocarriers for municipal wastewater treatment. The results showed that short-term chemical cleaning improved membrane performance and variable water head benefited in achieving higher permeate fluxes. Additionally, the wastewater treatment costs were relatively low.

Can pre-ozonation be combined with gravity-driven membrane filtration to treat shale gas wastewater?

Peng Tang et al.

Summary: Low-cost gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration combined with low dosage pre-ozonation has been shown to improve the stable flux of treatment for highly decentralized shale gas wastewater (SGW), although slightly impacting the organic content of effluent water. Pre-ozonation also influenced the microbial community structure, enhancing the performance of GDM processes in treating refractory wastewater.

Enhancing performance of biocarriers facilitated gravity-driven membrane (GDM) reactor for decentralized wastewater treatment: Effect of internal recirculation and membrane packing density

Seonki Lee et al.

Summary: The study showed that internal recirculation in GDM reactors improves water quality and membrane performance, while lower packing density membrane modules benefit nitrogen removal and permeate flux. Membrane packing density has minimal effect on microbial community compositions in GDM reactors with internal recirculation.

Evaluating the health risks of heavy metals from vegetables grown on soil irrigated with untreated and treated wastewater in Arba Minch, Ethiopia

Awoke Guadie et al.

Summary: The study found that the aerobic-anoxic treatment enhanced water quality and was beneficial for soil. Vegetables irrigated with untreated wastewater had higher concentrations of heavy metals, posing potential risks to human health. The health indexes showed that lead and cadmium levels in wastewater-irrigated vegetables could lead to non-carcinogenic disease for adults and children.

The applicability of anaerobically treated domestic wastewater as a nutrientmediumin hydroponic lettuce cultivation: Nitrogen toxicity and health risk assessment

Eunseok Lee et al.

Summary: The anaerobic effluent from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor was used as a nutrient medium for hydroponic cultivation of lettuce. However, nitrite toxicity inhibited the growth of lettuce plants, which was resolved by nitrification as a pre-treatment step. Efficient crop production can be achieved with suitable pre-treatment steps.
