Glacial erosion by the Trift glacier (Switzerland): Deciphering the development of riegels, rock basins and gorges

Olivia Steinemann et al.

Summary: This study examined the high cross-valley bedrock riegel and overdeepening in front of the Trift glacier in the Swiss Alps, using field survey and cosmogenic nuclide measurements to determine glacial erosion patterns. Results indicate increasing erosion rates from the Little Ice Age ice margin to the top of the riegel, with minimum erosion depths of 1.6-5 m. The formation of the overdeepening and riegel is attributed to a combination of factors including valley shape, bedrock structures, glacier confluence, and hydrology.

Seasonal origin of the thermal maxima at the Holocene and the last interglacial

Samantha Bova et al.

Summary: Proxy reconstructions show that peak temperatures in the Holocene and the last interglacial period may have exceeded modern warmth, contradicting monotonic warming simulated by climate models. The discrepancy between model results and reconstructions undermines confidence in both, but indicates different climate dynamics between the two periods due to changes in greenhouse gas levels and ice sheet extent. The study suggests that the early Holocene was cooled by larger remnant glacial ice sheets, while rising greenhouse gas levels in the late Holocene warmed the planet. Modern global temperatures may have surpassed those of the past 12,000 years and could approach the warmth of the last interglacial period.

Millennial-scale deglaciation across the European Alps at the transition between the Younger Dryas and the Early Holocene - evidence from a new cosmogenic nuclide chronology

Marie Protin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the timing of glacier fluctuations in the European Alps during the Younger Dryas/Early Holocene (YD/EH) transition. The findings suggest broadly synchronous behavior of glaciers across the Alps between 12 and 10 ka, indicating that common regional climate conditions had a major impact on Alpine glacier variations during this period. Additionally, similarities in glacier behavior and temperature records between the Alpine region and northern high latitudes suggest a teleconnection, with pronounced changes in seasonality between the Younger Dryas and the Early Holocene.

Early Holocene cold snaps and their expression in the moraine record of the eastern European Alps

Sandra M. Braumann et al.

Summary: Glaciers serve as valuable archives for studying past climate variations, providing insights into natural climate variability during the Holocene and the transition from the last glacial to the current interglacial. By analyzing glacier records and correlating them with climate proxy data, researchers can better understand millennial-scale warming and centennial-scale cooling events in the Earth's climate system. The evidence of glacier advances during the Little Ice Age and cold phases in the early Holocene points to a regional or even hemispheric climate driver beyond local influences.

On the attribution of industrial-era glacier mass loss to anthropogenic climate change

Gerard H. Roe et al.

Summary: Small ice caps and glaciers around the world have been losing mass and retreating since the industrial era, with anthropogenic factors playing a significant role. Recent studies indicate that the combined effects of natural climate change over the past millennium and anthropogenic climate change in the industrial era have contributed to this phenomenon.

In situ cosmogenic 10Be-14C-26Al measurements from recently deglaciated bedrock as a new tool to decipher changes in Greenland Ice Sheet size

Nicolas E. Young et al.

Summary: Recent research using new technology has revealed the evolution history of the Greenland Ice Sheet, showing that the ice sheet margin withdrew further inland after stabilizing near the modern margin for several thousand years, with the minimum extent of the ice sheet likely occurring around 5,000 years ago and approaching its historical maximum extent around 2,000 years ago. Model simulations suggest that the inland retreat of the ice margin driven by early to middle Holocene warmth may have been mitigated by increased precipitation. Triple Be-10-C-14-Al-26 measurements provide a valuable tool for understanding the duration of smaller-than-present ice over multiple timescales.
