Arctic Ozone Depletion in 2019/20: Roles of Chemistry, Dynamics and the Montreal Protocol

Wuhu Feng et al.

Summary: Using a three-dimensional chemical transport model and satellite observations, researchers investigated the Arctic ozone depletion in winter/spring 2019/20 and compared it with previous years. Persistently low temperatures led to extensive chlorine activation, while weak dynamical replenishment played a key role in causing very low column ozone values in the region. The study also showed that the gradual recovery of the ozone layer over the past two decades alleviated the polar cap ozone depletion in March 2020 by around 20 DU.

The Unusual Stratospheric Arctic Winter 2019/20: Chemical Ozone Loss From Satellite Observations and TOMCAT Chemical Transport Model

Mark Weber et al.

Summary: This study describes the dynamics and chemistry of the Arctic 2019/20 winter/spring season using satellite observations and chemical models, comparing the results with the previous record Arctic winter 2010/11. The findings suggest that the chemical ozone loss in 2019/20 was similar to that of 2010/11, and the Arctic cap temperatures hit a 40-year low in the winter, indicating further cooling in Arctic winters.

Prospect of Increased Disruption to the QBO in a Changing Climate

James A. Anstey et al.

Summary: The disruption to the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of tropical stratospheric winds during the 2019/20 Northern Hemisphere winter was similar to that seen in 2016, initiated by horizontal momentum transport from the Southern Hemisphere. Predictability associated with the regular phase progression of the QBO is lost during disruptions, and it is projected that disruptions to the QBO may become more common in the future. This could lead to decreased reliability in using the QBO as a source of predictability on lead times extending out to several years.
