An Abaqus plug-in to simulate fatigue crack growth

Mohammad Malekan et al.

Summary: Fatigue crack propagation is crucial in evaluating the design life of engineering components. This paper introduces a freely distributed plug-in for simulating fatigue crack growth with the commercial FE code Abaqus, covering five different fatigue crack growth models and validated through comparisons with analytical and experimental results. The simplicity and free distribution of the plug-in make it a useful simulation tool for industrial, research, and educational purposes.

A combined XFEM phase-field computational model for crack growth without remeshing

Alba Muixi et al.

Summary: This paper presents an adaptive strategy for phase-field simulations with transition to fracture, where phase-field equations are solved in small subdomains around crack tips for propagation, and an extended finite element method (XFEM) discretization is used in the rest of the domain to represent sharp cracks, reducing computational cost.

Fatigue crack growth simulation of interacting multiple cracks in perforated plates with multiple holes using boundary cracklet method

Talal Ahmed et al.

Summary: The recently developed boundary cracklet method (BCM) was used to model fatigue crack propagation (FCP) in complex geometries, showing its effectiveness. BCM was further used to analyze multiple crack interactions in a perforated plate, predicting crack propagation direction and introducing Yavuz's fatigue computational efficiency factor (Y-CF) to describe numerical method efficiency in fatigue problems.

Use of a rotation-invariant linear strain measure for linear elastic crack propagation calculations

Guido Dhondt et al.

Summary: The classical stress intensity factor concept, based on linear elastic calculations with infinitesimal strains, requires revisions when dealing with structures undergoing large rotations. A new strain measure based on the right stretch tensor is proposed to address this issue, effectively removing the local rotation from the linear strain measure. An example of crack propagation in a rotating beam demonstrates the effectiveness of this method.

Numerical Modeling of Crack Growth under Mixed-Mode Loading

Abdulnaser M. Alshoaibi

Summary: This paper aims to simulate the propagation of linear elastic cracks in 3D structures using Ansys software's SMART technology, accurately predicting crack growth paths and stress intensity factors. The study indicates that cracks are attracted to holes and change trajectory to reach or grow by the hole. Experimental crack path trajectories and stress intensity factors had very good agreement with computational study results.
