Second-Order Real Nodal-Line Semimetal in Three-Dimensional Graphdiyne

Cong Chen et al.

Summary: Based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we discovered that the three-dimensional (3D) graphdiyne, which has been experimentally synthesized, is the first realistic example of the recently proposed second-order real nodal-line semimetal. The material hosts a pair of real nodal rings protected by both real Chern numbers and 1D winding numbers, resulting in distinct topological boundary modes at different boundaries. We developed a low-energy model to describe the topological physics of 3D graphdiyne and discussed experimental aspects and potential topological transition to a 3D real Chern insulator phase.

Intertwined Weyl phases emergent from higher-order topology and unconventional Weyl fermions via crystalline symmetry

W. B. Rui et al.

Summary: We have discovered three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases by developing a theory for creating topological phases. These intertwined phases exhibit unconventional Weyl semimetallic and higher-order topological characteristics, and their key feature is the exotic intertwining. On 2D surfaces, the intertwining causes a periodic change in the Fermi-arc topology against surface orientation.

Higher-order topological semimetal in acoustic crystals

Qiang Wei et al.

Summary: The concept of higher-order topological materials goes beyond first-order topological states, featuring 1D hinge states and 0D corner states. A second-order topological Weyl semimetal has been experimentally demonstrated in a 3D-printed acoustic crystal, showcasing Weyl points, Fermi arc surface states, and hinge states.

Switching Spinless and Spinful Topological Phases with Projective PT Symmetry

Y. X. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reveals the possibility of switching the two fundamental classes via Z(2) projective representations, allowing for unique topological phases to be achieved in different classes. For PT symmetry, the occurrence of this switching mechanism is demonstrated when P inverses the gauge transformation required to recover the original Z(2) gauge connections under P.

Photoinduced spin-Hall resonance in a k3-Rashba spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional hole system

Ankita Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: The study investigates the band structure modulation and spin-Hall effect of an irradiated two-dimensional heavy-hole system with k(3)-Rashba spin-orbit coupling. It is found that under illumination, the band structure becomes anisotropic and additional spin-degeneracy points emerge in the energy dispersion, solely determined by the incident light's amplitude. When these points occur near the Fermi level, a resonance in spin-Hall conductivity is observed, while away from the degeneracy points, the average spin polarization is rotated by the light. Additionally, the effects of k(3)-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling are discussed.

Floquet higher-order Weyl and nexus semimetals

Weiwei Zhu et al.

Summary: This work reports the general design and characterization of two exotic, anomalous nonequilibrium gapless topological phases. The theoretical results presented advance the concept of obtaining higher-order semimetal phases using time-sequenced normal insulator phases. Future experiments on higher-order semimetal phases can be stimulated and guided by these theoretical findings.

Symmetry analysis of anomalous Floquet topological phases

Weiwei Zhu et al.

Summary: This work presents a physically motivated and easy-to-implement approach to enhance symmetry analysis to distinguish between different Floquet topological phases, particularly in the case of an inversion-symmetric periodically driven system. It shows that stable dynamical symmetry inversion points can be used to differentiate topological states from normal insulators, even when their symmetry eigenvalues are the same.

Higher-orderWeyl superconductors with anisotropic Weyl-point connectivity

W. B. Rui et al.

Summary: This study reveals that higher-order Weyl superconductors can be realized in odd-parity topological superconductors with time-reversal symmetry being broken by periodic driving. Unlike traditional Weyl points, the higher-order Weyl points in the bulk separate different topological phases, and their projections on the surface are connected by hinge Majorana arcs. The anisotropic connectivity of hinge Majorana arcs is identified as a characteristic feature of higher-order Weyl materials.

Hierarchy of higher-order Floquet topological phases in three dimensions

Tanay Nag et al.

Summary: In this study, a hierarchy of higher-order Floquet topological phases in three dimensions is constructed by periodically driving static first-order topological phases with suitable discrete symmetry breaking Wilson-Dirac masses. Realizations of second-order and third-order Floquet topological states, supporting dynamic hinge and corner modes, respectively, are demonstrated by introducing one and two discrete symmetry breaking Wilson-Dirac mass(es). The resulting dynamic hinge and corner modes, protected by antiunitary spectral or particle-hole symmetries, live on boundaries with different codimensions.

Tunable fragile topology in Floquet systems

Rui-Xing Zhang et al.

Summary: The paper extends the concept of fragile topology to periodically driven systems and demonstrates driving-induced fragile topology in two different models. A rich phase diagram including Floquet fragile topological phases, Floquet Chern insulators, and trivial atomic phases is discovered, with transitions between different phases achieved by tuning the driving amplitudes. Corner-localized fractional charges are identified as a smoking-gun signal of fragile topology in the systems, paving the way for studying and realizing fragile topology in Floquet systems.

Floquet higher-order topological insulator in a periodically driven bipartite lattice

Weiwei Zhu et al.

Summary: Floquet higher-order topological insulators (FHOTIs) are a novel topological phase that can occur in periodically driven lattices. An experimentally realistic bipartite system can host FHOTI phases and exhibit interesting phase transitions without breaking lattice symmetry. In the FHOTI phase, the lattice features corner modes at specific eigenphases that are robust against disorder.
