Simple and Broadly Applicable Definition of Shear Transformation Zones

David Richard et al.

Summary: The study proposes a simple definition of shear transformation zones (STZs) based on the harmonic approximation of a glass's energy, which is shown to be more broadly applicable than previous anharmonic definitions. An open-source library is provided for analyzing low-lying STZs in computer glasses and laboratory materials. The results represent a methodological advancement towards characterizing mechanical disorder in glasses and understanding their yielding behavior.

Fast dynamics in a model metallic glass-forming material

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fast beta- and Johari-Goldstein relaxation processes, along with the elastic scattering response of glass-forming liquids and the boson peak. These processes are found to be universal, even in glass-forming liquids with a fragile-strong transition. Heating leads to the growth of stringlets, resulting in an increase in relaxation process intensity and excitation softening.

Boson-peak-like anomaly caused by transverse phonon softening in strain glass

Shuai Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers discovered a low-temperature feature in strain glass that is similar to the well-known boson peak anomaly in structural glasses, but cannot be explained by existing mechanisms. This anomaly is caused by the phonon softening of the non-transforming matrix surrounding martensitic domains, and it verifies a recent theoretical model without assumptions of disorder. This finding may provide fresh insights into understanding the nature of glassy states and associated vibrational properties.

Summary: This study introduces a new concept of integrated glassy defect (IGD) based on machine learning and atomistic physics to comprehensively understand the structural features and dynamic properties of amorphous materials. This approach can efficiently predict athermal plasticity and detect vibrational anomalies as well as relaxation and diffusion dynamics in glasses.

Atomic vibration as an indicator of the propensity for configurational rearrangements in metallic glasses

Summary: In metallic glasses, predicting the propensity for atomic rearrangements is challenging due to spatial variations in their likelihood. Vibrational parameters are more effective than static structural parameters in forecasting local configurational transitions.
