The Genomes of Two Billfishes Provide Insights into the Evolution of Endothermy in Teleosts

Baosheng Wu et al.

Summary: Endothermy is a convergent phenomenon that has evolved independently multiple times in vertebrates, providing significant advantages for organisms in expanding their ecological niches. Through genome sequencing of billfishes, it was found that there are convergent amino acid replacements in proteins related to heat production and the visual system in endothermic teleost lineages. Additionally, billfish-specific genetic innovations are associated with heat exchange, thermoregulation, and specific morphological features.
