Multi-mode excitation drives disorder during the ultrafast melting of a C4-symmetry-broken phase

Daniel Perez-Salinas et al.

Summary: Spontaneous C-4-symmetry breaking phases are common in layered quantum materials and compete with other phases. However, traditional theories fail to explain certain materials, indicating the need for methods beyond mean-field to understand light-induced phase transitions.

Visualization of dynamic polaronic strain fields in hybrid lead halide perovskites

Burak Guzelturk et al.

Summary: Diffuse X-ray scattering with femtosecond resolution reveals the formation and relaxation of polaronic distortions in halide perovskites. These structural changes are quantified and correlated to transient changes in carrier effective mass.

Advanced First-Principle Modeling of Relativistic Ruddlesden-Popper Strontium Iridates

Peitao Liu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of advanced first-principle methods in studying the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of iridates in the Ruddlesden-Popper series. The results show the important role of spin-orbit coupling and Hubbard U in establishing characteristic insulating states in these compounds, and clarify the magnetic ground states and transitions in different dimensionalities. Optical transitions and conductivity spectra were used to study the dimensionality controlled metal-insulator transition across the series.

Laser-induced transient magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 throughout the Brillouin zone

Daniel G. Mazzone et al.

Summary: Using ultrafast resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we have shown that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, persisting for several picoseconds. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred for achieving rapid manipulation of magnetism.
