Transport of a Single Cold Ion Immersed in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

T. Dieterle et al.

Summary: The study investigates the transport dynamics of a single low-energy ionic impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate by implanting the impurity using fast electric field pulses. The results show diffusive transport properties of the impurity and allow for the measurement of its mobility through comparison with simulations. This research opens up a new path for studying dynamics of charged quantum impurities in ultracold matter.

Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics and formation of the Bose polaron

Magnus G. Skou et al.

Summary: Advancing our understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems remains a major challenge in physics. The experimental observation of the non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum impurity immersed in a bosonic environment reveals a systematic picture of polaron formation and provides a link between few-body processes and many-body dynamics. The measurements demonstrate universal dynamical behavior in interacting many-body systems and offer new pathways to study non-equilibrium quantum phenomena.

Pulsed Ion Microscope to Probe Quantum Gases

C. Veit et al.

Summary: The development of the quantum gas microscope has enabled unprecedented spatial resolution for in situ probing of ultracold gaseous matter. However, the study of phenomena on increasingly smaller length scales is limited by the wavelength of the imaging light. The high-resolution ion microscope serves as a versatile and powerful experimental tool for investigating quantum gases with a large depth of field and a potential resolution limit of approximately 200 nm.

Attractive and Repulsive Exciton-Polariton Interactions Mediated by an Electron Gas

Miguel A. Bastarrachea-Magnani et al.

Summary: This study explores the strong photon-photon interactions in a solid-state setting using a microscopic many-body theory, revealing the attractive interactions between polaritons mediated by particle-hole excitations in an electron gas. The interactions between trions and polaritons mediated by electron exchange can be either repulsive or attractive, presenting promising prospects for nonlinear optical components. The mediated interactions, intrinsic to the quasiparticles, can be over an order of magnitude stronger than direct polariton-polariton interactions in the absence of an electron gas.

Ionic polaron in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Grigory E. Astrakharchik et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the behavior of an ionic impurity in a weakly interacting gas of bosonic atoms and identify two main phases of a polaronic regime and a strongly correlated state with many bosons bound to the ion under weak interactions. The presence of strong interactions in a many-body quantum system can lead to exotic effects, and the competition of length scales in a simple setup can give rise to a highly correlated mesoscopic state. The findings are relevant to experiments using hybrid atom-ion setups in the ultracold regime, showing vastly different polaronic properties compared to neutral quantum impurities.

Charged Polarons and Molecules in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Esben Rohan Christensen et al.

Summary: This study investigates a mobile ion immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, revealing the intricate interplay between few- and many-body physics due to the long-range nature of the ion-atom interaction. Various techniques are used to describe the rich physics and calculate the full spectral response of the ion. It is shown that the ion-atom interaction leads to the existence of polaronic and molecular states, with the spectral weight of molecules scaling with increasing powers of density.

Dynamics of a trapped ion in a quantum gas: Effects of particle statistics

Lorenzo Oghittu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the quantum dynamics of an ion interacting with either a Bose or spin-polarized Fermi gas in a radio-frequency trap. The research considers quantum optical master equations under weak coupling and Lamb-Dicke approximations. Results show that ion dynamics are influenced by the quantum statistics of the gas, with lower ionic energies achievable with a fermionic gas.

Stability and breakdown of Fermi polarons in a strongly interacting Fermi-Bose mixture

Isabella Fritsche et al.

Summary: In this experiment, the properties of a strongly interacting mixture of bosonic K-41 impurities in a Fermi sea of ultracold Li-6 atoms were investigated. By using radio-frequency injection spectroscopy and manipulating interspecies interactions with a Feshbach resonance, the researchers found that the energy of Fermi polarons was insensitive to impurity concentration. The breakdown of the Fermi polaron description was observed in the denser condensed fraction of the bosonic K-41 gas, where Bose polarons formed by Li-6 fermions were detected.

Life and death of a cold BaRb+ molecule inside an ultracold cloud of Rb atoms

Amir Mohammadi et al.

Summary: We investigate the evolution of a cold single BaRb+ molecule during continuous collisions with ultracold Rb atoms, developing methods to discriminate between different ion species, electronic states, and kinetic ion energy ranges. By analyzing experimental data in conjunction with theoretical insights, we achieve a consistent description of the molecule's trajectory through various atomic and molecular states. Monte Carlo simulations accurately describe the measured dynamics, and rates for collisional and radiative relaxation, photodissociation, spin-flip collisions, and chemical reactions are determined as additional results.
