Summary: The concept of the uncanny valley, proposed by Masahiro Mori in 1970, refers to a region in the continuum of human-likeness where an entity may elicit a cold, eerie, repellent feeling. Recent studies have shown that this feeling can be induced not only by entities modeled after humans but also nonhuman animals. Despite various proposed theories to explain the mechanisms underlying the uncanny valley effect, the perceptual and cognitive factors are not yet fully understood. A within-subjects experiment involving 136 participants tested the predictions of nine classes of theories, with configural processing theory and atypicality theory showing the most significant effects.
