Fluorogenic Probes/Inhibitors of β-Lactamase and their Applications in Drug-Resistant Bacteria

Yang Ding et al.

Summary: Beta-lactam antibiotics are important inventions in treating infections, but the emergence of beta-lactamase in bacteria leads to drug resistance. Various detection methods and inhibitors are available, and designing improved probes may help overcome bacterial resistance.

Naringin inhibits the biofilms of metallo-β-lactamases (MβLs) producing Pseudomonas species isolated from camel meat

Fohad Mabood Husain et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that naringin can effectively inhibit biofilm formation by metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas spp. in camel meat and eradicate preformed biofilms. Naringin showed strong binding affinity towards biofilm associated proteins, indicating its potential as a food preservative and treatment for biofilm-based infections.

Anti-biofilm activity of LC-MS based Solanum nigrum essential oils against multi drug resistant biofilm forming P. mirabilis

Jamal M. Khaled et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections are the second most important diseases worldwide, primarily due to the increased antibiotic resistant microbes. This study focused on inhibiting the biofilm formation of Proteus mirabilis using essential oils extracted from Solanum nigrum, showing significant antimicrobial activity at 200 µg/mL. Various experiments confirmed the anti-biofilm effect of these essential oils through different methods, highlighting their potential as a natural remedy for combating urinary tract infections caused by P. mirabilis.

Detection of Vibrio cholerae aDNA in human burials from the fifth cholera pandemic in Argentina (1886-1887 AD)

Dario Alejandro Ramirez et al.

Summary: This study confirmed at least one individual in a mass grave in Cordoba, Argentina, was a victim of the fifth cholera pandemic by analyzing ancient DNA samples. The combination of multiple lines of evidence strengthened the understanding of the presence, effects, and potential evolutionary paths of the disease in the past.

Antibacterial potential of Malaysian ethnomedicinal plants against methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Low Yi Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the antibacterial activities of 61 plant extracts from 49 Malaysian ethnomedicinal plants, with 7 plant extracts showing good efficacy against MSSA strains. When combined with vancomycin and ciprofloxacin, the active plant extracts showed no interaction against MSSA and MRSA strains.

Plant derived coumestrol phytochemical targets human skin carcinoma cells by inducing mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, inhibition of cell migration and invasion and modulation of m-TOR/PI3K/AKT signalling pathway

Weiwei Kuang et al.

Summary: The study found that the phytoestrogen coumestrol has significant toxicity against human skin cancer cells, inducing cell cytotoxicity through apoptosis stimulation. Coumestrol also inhibits cell migration and invasion in skin cancer cells while blocking the m-TOR/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

The gold nanoparticle reduces Vibrio cholerae pathogenesis by inhibition of biofilm formation and disruption of the production and structure of cholera toxin

Tanaya Chatterjee et al.

Summary: Formation of biofilm by Vibrio cholerae is crucial in cholera pathogenesis and transmission. Gold nanoparticles show potential as an effective alternative to antibiotics in targeting biofilms and virulence factors. Among the different sizes and shapes of AuNPs tested, AuNS100 appears to be the most effective in inhibiting biofilm formation and destruction, as well as disrupting the production and function of cholera toxin.
