Alternative Conceptual Approach to the Design of Bifunctional Catalysts: An Osmium Germylene System for the Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid

Maria L. Buil et al.

Summary: The reaction of hexahydride OsH6(PiPr(3))(2) with a P,Ge,P-germylene-diphosphine leads to an osmium tetrahydride derivative with a Ge,P-chelate, serving as a bifunctional catalyst for formic acid dehydrogenation. The study reveals that hydrogen formation occurs exclusively on the coordination sphere of the metal center, while both the metal center and the sigma-donor Lewis acid cooperatively participate in CO2 release, which is the rate-determining step.

Bifunctional Effect of a Triple-Bond Heterobimetallic Zr/Co System for Hydrogen Activation

Yinwu Li et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the catalytic mechanism of the Zr/Co complex in H-2 activation and hydrogenation, revealing the stabilization of the Lewis acidic Zr center by the Zr Co triple bond, and the promotion of bridging hydride bond formation through breaking the Zr Co triple bond. Reactivity and conjugated effects play crucial roles in subsequent hydrogenation, while E/Z selectivity is influenced by the steric hindrance of the Pr group. The design of catalysts with divergent E/Z selectivity is based on the understanding of the bifunctional mode of the heterobimetallic multiple bond.

Quantification of Cooperativity between Metal Sites in Dinuclear Transition Metal Complexes Containing the (2-Dimethylamino)-4-(2-pyrimidinyl)pyrimidine Ligand

Tatjana Wall et al.

Summary: A concept for quantifying cooperative effects in transition-metal complexes is demonstrated through a series of novel mono- and binuclear complexes based on a specific ligand. These complexes containing iridium, platinum, and palladium were studied for their absorption and fluorescence spectra, with a focus on electronic absorptions and energetic shifts between mononuclear and dinuclear complexes. Fluorescence spectra were also analyzed in relation to the concept of cooperativity.

Summary: The catalytic dehydrocoupling of H3B·NMe2H using Cp2Zr(Cl)(μ-Me3SiC3SiMe3)Zr(Cl)Cp-2 (1)/MeLi was studied, revealing the formation mechanism of Zr amidoborane and hydride species. Unusual dinuclear complex Cp2Zr(C2SiMe3)(μ-R)ZrCp2 (R = CH(2)SiMe3, 7; R = H, 9) formed through activation of the allenediide unit of the precatalyst 1 was identified as potential single-component catalysts for the dehydrocoupling of amine boranes.

The key role of the latent N-H group in Milstein's catalyst for ester hydrogenation

John Pham et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the ruthenium catalyst for ester hydrogenation is activated through dehydroalkylation of the pincer ligand, supporting a proposed catalytic mechanism involving the NHEt-substituted derivative. Experimental results show a first-order dependence on ruthenium and hydrogen concentrations, saturation behavior in ester concentration, and inhibition by the product alcohol. The findings are in good agreement with DFT calculations and crystallographically characterized catalytic intermediates.
