Real-Time Overcharge Warning and Early Thermal Runaway Prediction of Li-Ion Battery by Online Impedance Measurement

Nawei Lyu et al.

Summary: This article discovers a characteristic of lithium-ion batteries during the charging process, where the slope of the dynamic impedance in the frequency band of 30-90 Hz changes from negative to positive at the beginning of overcharging. By utilizing this characteristic, the charging can be cut off when the slope changes, effectively avoiding thermal runaway accidents. This feature is easy to identify and does not require complex mathematical models and parameters. The prediction method based on this feature can be implemented using an online dynamic impedance measurement device designed by the authors, making it suitable for large-scale applications.
