MicroRNAs as Potential Regulators of Immune Response Networks in Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Jose A. Canas et al.

Summary: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are important factors in global mortality and morbidity, accounting for approximately 6% of total deaths worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as promising diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for CRDs, playing crucial roles in inflammation-related pathways in asthma and COPD. Their deregulation in various biofluids and cells of patients, as well as their involvement in histopathological changes and treatment response, highlight the potential of miRNAs as prognostic tools and therapeutic targets in these respiratory diseases.

SP-A and SP-D: Dual Functioning Immune Molecules With Antiviral and Immunomodulatory Properties

Alastair Watson et al.

Summary: SP-A and SP-D are soluble innate immune molecules that play dual roles as anti-infectious and immunomodulatory agents, maintaining lung homeostasis. They have the potential to bind various viruses, including influenza A virus and RSV, modulating viral clearance and inflammatory response, thus showing therapeutic potential.

Environmental and Genetic Factors in the Pathogenesis of COPD in the Road-Working Population

Yumin Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study of a non-smoking road-working population in Northeast China, environmental and genetic factors contributing to the development of COPD were investigated. Aluminum was found to potentially play a role in the development of COPD in this specific population, and unique gene expressions were identified in relation to blood cytokines.
