Detection of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in the microalgae-bacteria samples further supported the efficiency of the system.

Integrated valorization system for simultaneous high strength organic wastewater treatment and astaxanthin production from Haematococcus pluvialis

Summary: This study proposes an integrated system for treating high-strength organic wastewater, such as potato juice wastewater, and upcycling nutrients for astaxanthin production. Pre-treatment with either acidification or methanation resulted in higher biomass yields of H. pluvialis, leading to significantly higher astaxanthin production compared to standard culture media. The integrated system contributed to efficient removal of COD, phosphorus, and ammonia, as well as simultaneous methane and astaxanthin production.
