Evaluation of Crack resistance and Adhesive Energy of AlCrN and Ag doped a-C Films deposited on Chrome Nitrided 316 LVM Stainless Steel

Lokeswar Patnaik et al.

Summary: The study found that AlCrN coating exhibited superior performance in terms of hardness and elastic modulus compared to a-C:Ag coating; the inability of Ag to form carbide with carbon in the a-C network resulted in discontinuity in the structure of a-C:Ag coating. The AlCrN coating showed higher compressive stress and fracture toughness, facilitating absorption of indentation load through plastic deformation.

Wear assessment of Cr2O3-/TiAlN-coated DAC-10 tool steel against steel and Al2O3 counterbodies

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: TiAlN film was deposited on Cr2O3-coated plasma-nitrided DAC-10 tool steel to obtain multilayer Cr2O3/TiAlN coating layer using cathodic arc deposition technique. The coating exhibited improved hardness, elastic modulus, and adhesion, with different wear behavior against steel and Al2O3 counterbodies under dry sliding conditions. The friction-induced wear behavior of the coating was greatly influenced by its structural properties and the frictional behavior of the counterbodies.

Effect of lubricated sliding wear against CFRPEEK on the nanomechanical properties of Ag alloyed Cr/DLC thin film

Lokeswar Patnaik et al.

Summary: Ag-doped Cr/DLC coatings were successfully deposited on medical grade stainless steel, demonstrating elastic nature and 33% ductility. The coatings showed improved adhesion and lubrication during sliding tests, but experienced mild wear and wear scar gullies due to graphitization of carbon. Additionally, there were significant differences in hardness, elastic work, and plastic work between unworn and worn surfaces, but no significant difference in the H/E attribute. Raman spectra indicated no significant loss in structural integrity of the composite coating between worn and unworn surfaces.

Summary: This study investigated the nanomechanical properties and wear behavior of hardened tool steels SKD-61 and SKD-11, with similar hardness achieved through hardening. The results showed that SKD-61 exhibited better wear performance than SKD-11 at high load and high sliding velocity conditions. The primary wear mechanisms observed included microgroove with plastic deformation, micro cracks, adhesion, and oxidation.
