Bacteria-Targeting Photodynamic Nanoassemblies for Efficient Treatment of Multidrug-Resistant Biofilm Infected Keratitis

Yiwen Zhu et al.

Summary: The newly designed P alpha Gal(50)-b-PGRB(20) can effectively disperse biofilms and selectively kill MDR-P. aeruginosa within biofilms by binding to Lec A in the extracellular polymeric substances and on the P. aeruginosa membrane under low phototoxicity caused by broad-spectrum aPDT. It has bactericidal activities by damaging DNA, RNA, protein, and membrane, showing potential for better corneal recovery in MDR-P. aeruginosa biofilm infected keratitis model.

Synthesis and Bioactivity of Guanidinium-Functionalized Pillar[5]arene as a Biofilm Disruptor

Shuwen Guo et al.

Summary: A novel guanidinium-functionalized pillar[5]arene, GP5, was designed and synthesized to effectively combat bacterial biofilms. GP5 showed high antibacterial potency against Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains and successfully disrupted preformed biofilms by penetrating biofilm barriers and destroying biofilm-enclosed bacteria. Additionally, host-guest complexation between GP5 and cefazolin sodium exhibited synergistic disruption activity against biofilms, providing a novel supramolecular platform for biofilm eradication.

The effect of topology of PEG chain on the stability of micelles in brine and serum

Bin Wu et al.

Summary: Polymeric micelles, especially flower micelles with a unique PEG shell, are more stable in the presence of serum and salt compared to traditional micelles. This stability is crucial for drug delivery, as it prevents aggregation and ensures efficient delivery of therapeutic agents to the target area.

High Antibacterial Activity and Selectivity of the Versatile Polysulfoniums that Combat Drug Resistance

Jing Sun et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient strategy for synthesizing antibacterial polypeptoid sulfonium ions through ring-opening polymerization and post-polymerization functionalization. Systematic investigations were conducted to explore the impact of hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance on antimicrobial activity and selectivity. The optimized amphiphilic balance in the chloroepoxypropane-modified polysulfoniums showed higher selectivity towards bacteria and great efficiency in inhibiting biofilm formations.

Cobalt-Mediated Switchable Catalysis for the One-Pot Synthesis of Cyclic Polymers

Yajun Zhao et al.

Summary: The cobalt salen pentenoate complex is designed as a catalyst for the ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides/anhydrides/CO2. The active species is transformed into linear precursors that lead to the formation of organocobalt-functionalized cyclic polyesters with excellent regioselectivity. The cyclic products can further react to generate metal-free cyclic polymers or serve as photo-initiators for tadpole-shaped copolymers.
