Experimental studies of the competition between fusion and quasifission in the formation of heavy and superheavy nuclei

D. J. Hinde et al.

Summary: Quasifission competes with fusion in heavy ion reactions, suppressing the cross sections for formation of heavy elements significantly. Nuclear structure plays a key role in determining the competition between quasifission and fusion. Experimental studies over the last 40 years have provided important insights, but conflicting results still exist between different investigations.
