Strain partitioning in a large intracontinental strike-slip system accommodating backarc-convex orocline formation: The Circum-Moesian Fault System of the Carpatho-Balkanides

Nemanja Krstekanic et al.

Summary: The study examines the kinematics and mechanics of indentation in an orocline with a backarc-convex geometry, demonstrating that deformation is accommodated by a complex network of strike-slip, thrust, and normal faults within the Circum-Moesian Fault System. The evolution of the fault system is driven by subduction of the Carpathian embayment, resulting in lateral translation and rotation associated with the indentation of the Moesian Platform. The rates of dextral deformation dramatically increased with the onset of Carpathian slab retreat and backarc extension, facilitated by the pull exerted by the retreating slab.

Hf isotopic constraints and detrital zircon ages for the Austroalpine basement evolution of Eastern Alps: Review and new data

Ruihong Chang et al.

Summary: The pre-Alpine basement of the Austroalpine mega-unit in the Alps is composed of a heterogeneous series of continental units, island arcs, ophiolites, subduction meacute accent langes, accretionary wedges, and seamounts affected by different metamorphic grades. The complex tectonic evolutionary histories and remolten sources of different ages in the pre-Alpine complexes likely assembled not earlier than the Late Permian or Early Triassic, representing multiple locations before final accretion.

Carboniferous high-P metamorphism and deformation in the Belledonne Massif (Western Alps)

Jean-Baptiste Jacob et al.

Summary: The study confirms the age of Variscan high-pressure metamorphism in the Palaeozoic basement of the western Alps, with ages of 456 ± 4 Ma and 448 ± 6 Ma obtained from eclogites. The peak pressure stage in the retrogressed eclogites was estimated to be >1.4 GPa at 690-740 degrees C, followed by decompression. Metamorphic zircon rims yield U-Pb dates scattering between 340 and 310 Ma, representing late stages of melt crystallization. The development of a mylonitic S2 foliation correlates with retrogression in the amphibolite facies during the mid-late Carboniferous, indicating exhumation of eclogites mixed with mid-crustal felsic lithologies.
