Research needs targeting direct air capture of carbon dioxide: Material & process performance characteristics under realistic environmental conditions

Fanhe Kong et al.

Summary: The extraction of CO2 from ambient air, known as direct air capture (DAC), is an important technology for mitigating global warming. However, most research on DAC has been conducted under indoor temperature conditions and lacks consideration for the applicability in extreme outdoor conditions. Therefore, there is a need to develop DAC materials and system designs to adapt to sub-ambient temperatures and conduct further research to fill the technical gaps.

Coal direct chemical looping process: 250 kW pilot-scale testing for power generation and carbon capture

Yitao Zhang et al.

Summary: Chemical looping combustion (CLC) and coal-direct chemical looping (CDCL) are promising technologies for generating concentrated CO2 streams and reducing energy consumption and costs in power generation. The CDCL pilot unit testing using iron based oxygen carriers successfully achieved high coal conversion rates and confirmed the concept's potential for coal combustion with CO2 capture.

Operating temperatures affect direct air capture of CO2 in polyamine-loaded mesoporous silica

Yihe Miao et al.

Summary: The research revealed that the CO2 adsorption selectivity of polyethylenimine-loaded mesoporous silica decreases with reduced adsorption temperatures below 15 degrees C. Additionally, a polyamine loading of 50 wt% in tetraethylenepentamine-loaded mesoporous silica exhibits an outstanding capture capacity of 2.30 mmol CO2/g in a wide range of adsorption temperatures under simulated air. Furthermore, the Avrami model could provide a robust prediction for the adsorption and desorption kinetics of polyamine-loaded mesoporous silica even at low temperatures.

Solvent Impregnated Polymers Loaded with Liquid-Like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials for Enhanced Kinetics of Direct Air Capture and Point Source CO2 Capture

Guanhe Rim et al.

Summary: Hybrid CO2 capture materials known as solvent impregnated polymers (SIPs) have been developed to improve the capture kinetics of high viscosity water-lean solvents. By incorporating liquid-like nanoparticle organic hybrid materials functionalized with polyethylenimine (NOHM-I-PEI) into a shell material and UV-curing it, gas-permeable solid sorbents with uniform loading (NPEI-SIPs) are produced. The CO2 capture kinetics of NPEI-SIPs have shown a significant increase due to the SIP design, providing a larger interfacial surface area for CO2 adsorption. The optimal loading of NOHM-I-PEI and sorption temperature were found to be around 49 wt% and 50 degrees Celsius, respectively, while NPEI-SIPs exhibited good thermal stability over multiple temperature swing cycles. Under humid conditions, NPEI-SIPs demonstrated high CO2 loadings for different concentrations, suggesting their effectiveness in capturing CO2 from various sources.

Summary: This study defines the target properties of CO2 capture adsorbents that would ensure economic viability of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), emphasizing working capacity, lifetime, heat of adsorption, and exponential degradation decay constants. The research predicts that a BECCS process cost of $65/t-CO2 can be achieved with specific adsorbent properties, including cost, working capacity, heat of adsorption, and minimum lifetime.
