Summary: Evidence on ERAS in IBD is lacking, but this group of patients might benefit from consistent adoption of the pathway. Future studies should define if IBD-specific ERAS pathways and selection criteria are needed.

Clinical indicators for the incidence of postoperative ileus after elective surgery for colorectal cancer

Yosuke Namba et al.

Summary: After elective surgery for colorectal cancer, male sex, poor performance status, and intraoperative in-out balance per body weight are independently associated with the development of postoperative ileus. Controlling intraoperative in-out balance is crucial in lowering the risk for postoperative ileus.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in gynecology oncology

Giorgio Bogani et al.

Summary: ERAS is a pathway designed to promote early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery, with three important components: preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative program. Adoption of ERAS can lead to lower complication rates, shorter hospital stays, improved patient outcomes, and reduced overall cost of care.

Summary: Postoperative Ileus is a common complication after abdominal surgery, with various treatment strategies lacking strong evidence to support their effectiveness. Current preventive measures include multimodal, opioid-sparing analgesia, epidural catheters or transverse abdominis plane block.

Risk factors for upper and lower type prolonged postoperative ileus following surgery for Crohn's disease

Ioannis Pozios et al.

Summary: This study identified different risk factors for upper and lower PPOI after ileocecal resection in patients with CD. A differentiated upper/lower type approach should be considered in future research and clinical practice. High-risk patients for each type of PPOI should be closely monitored, and modifiable risk factors, such as preoperative anemia and opioids, should be avoided if possible.

ERAS pathway for gastric cancer surgery: adherence, outcomes and prognostic factors for compliance in a Western centre

Pietro Maria Lombardi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the compliance to an ERAS program for gastric cancer surgery in Western countries, with findings indicating that most patients were able to adhere to the ERAS pathway. However, critical items had lower adherence rates, and factors such as age, ASA score, and total gastrectomy were associated with failure to complete the ERAS pathway. Despite these challenges, the ERAS program showed feasibility in malignant gastric surgery at a tertiary referral Western center, suggesting that preoperative factors should not be exclusion criteria for ERAS.
